BRIONI – MODERN SHIPWRECK 

The steamship Brioni, whose wreck now lies near the islet of Ravnik near Vis, was built in 1909 at the Cantiere Navale Triestino in Monfalcone to transport passengers and goods along the Adriatic coast for the Österreichische Lloyd Company. It sank on February 2nd 1930 when  severe weather caused it to hit the shore. The fate of the crew is unknown but the ship was  most likely transporting tobacco and wine during its final voyage from Split to Vis. The ship  was 69 meters long, had a steam engine capable of reaching 12.5 knots and its Gross  Registered Tonnage was 1111 tons. The wreck is extremely well preserved and lies on its side at a depth of 45 to 63 meters.
