VASSILIOS T. – MODERN SHIPWRECK

The Greek merchant ship Vassilios T. sank in 1939 near Cape Stupišće, not far from the town of Komiža on the island of Vis. The wreck is 104 meters long, 15.1 meters wide and, due to lying at a depth of 22 to 55 meters, is ideal both for new as well as experienced divers. Originally named Eastern Temple, it was built in 1920 at the Nikita Shipyard in Osaka for the American shipping company High Seas Transportation Inc. from New York. It sank on March 19th 1939 while transporting coal from Swansea to Venice after its rudder malfunctioned, causing it to hit the coast. The ship’s mast is still intact and its bow rises to 15 meters below the surface while the stern rests at a depth of 55 meters. The wreck lies on its port side and its interior can be easily accessed by divers.
